Disable Tab Tearing

Turns off the Tab Tearing ‘feature’ .

Compatibility

Works with: Firefox 3.6+

Background

A new ‘feature’ in Firefox 3.5 allowed users to ‘tear off’ a tab and have that tab placed in a new window. While somewhat practical, many user have discovered the ‘tab tearing’ feature is too sensitive. It is way too easy to accidentally ‘tear’ the current tab simply when moving between tabs.

The Tweak

Back in June 2009, WhiteAlice0775 created an add-on named bug489729 (this is one of the bug #’s which people complained about this ‘feature’) which gives the ability for the user to turn off the tab tearing ‘feature’.

  • Install bug4897259
  • Restart Firefox
  • Upon restart go to the add-ons manager and click Options on bug489729
  • Place a check in the boxes
  • Click OK

Setting take effect immediately.

Notes

The default ‘sensitivity’ of the Tab Tearing feature has been greatly improved in Firefox 4 and newer.
